My First and Second Math Midterms

June 2023

Math was a class I wasn't expecting to take; as per my intended major (American Ethnic Studies), I thought I was long past the days of grinding for rigorous STEM tests and crying over red X's on WebAssign. I'm not quite sure why I decided to take Math 125 this quarter (perhaps some sort of closure for officially finishing calculus after 2 grueling years of it in high school), but what I can say is that my experience so far in Math 125 has taught me about success and hubris. A lot of the initial units covered topics that I've learned about previously. Combine that with an aced first midterm, I quickly began to become too overconfident in my diminishing consistency in studying, and as the second midterm hit, I was baffled at how much harder it was (and how much worse I'm expecting to do). But I'm so glad to have had this uncomfortable experience sooner in my college career rather than later; regardless if math is or isn't my favorite subject (or one relevant to my intended major), I've learned an invaluable lesson in reconciling success with hubris; to make sure I'm consistent with my studies and I take each evaluation seriously.
